The working

Planning the leave at the clinic

The dates. Day 1 is the first day of leave. Full pay runs to day 45, half pay to day 60, and the person is back on day 61 unless unpaid days are added.

The pay. The monthly salary divided by 30 gives a daily rate: 45 days at the full rate, 15 at half.

Cover. For a clinic, the useful number is the return date: plan treatment room cover and patient bookings around it.

These are the legal minimums. A contract or clinic policy can give more. For a dispute, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation decides.

How long is maternity leave in the UAE private sector?
60 days under Article 30 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021: the first 45 days on full pay and the next 15 days on half pay.
Can maternity leave be extended?
Yes, by up to 45 more days without pay, taken in one go or in parts, when the mother has an illness caused by the pregnancy or birth, or the baby is unwell, and a medical certificate backs it.
Does an employee need a year of service for paid maternity leave?
No. Under the 2021 law the 60 days apply whatever the length of service, which is a change from the older labour law.
What about nursing breaks after the return?
Until the baby is six months old, the mother can take one or two breaks a day to breastfeed, up to an hour in total.
